Diego Romero es un artista multi-disciplinario de Puerto Rico. Romero explora el arte como lenguaje, yuxtaponiendo símbolos tales como emblemas culturales y logos; recontextualizando las imágenes como una forma de resistencia e invención. Su obra visual codifica aspectos históricos y sociopolíticos del Puerto Rico actual. A través de sus soportes busca descolonizar y resignificar estas cuestiones mediante la apropiación de objetos. En 2018, además del nacimiento de su hija Isla Estela, tuvo su primera exhibición individual llamada Exterior en El Cuadrado Gris.

Luego de tocar en las calles del país y otras ciudades internacionalmente, Romero lanza su primer proyecto como músico solista, titulado Una Voz. El álbum de corta duración está cimentado en ritmos afro-caribeños y tradiciones indígenas de Puerto Rico. Además en febrero de 2020 se presentó en Bogotá, Colombia como vocalista principal de la banda de latin-metal Puya. A lo largo de su carrera también ha colaborado con el grupo Tepeu, Danny Rivera, Alkem, entre otros. Por otro lado el artista alinea la composición y la producción musical con frecuencias de sonido para generar conexión como una forma de liberación personal y colectiva. Diego ha participado en exhibiciones colectivas y recientemente ha producido presentaciones de música en vivo en Puerto Rico y EEUU.

Romero ha estado activo en el graffiti y muralismo en el área metropolitana desde 1998, aprendiendo de la mano de “Thor”, “Ske”, y otros. También se desarrolló al lado de Rosamarie Berrios, Martín García Rivera, Jaime Romano, Susana Herrero, Enrique García Gutiérrez y Rafael Trelles. Sus murales se encuentran internacionalmente en ciudades como Montreal, New York, Philadelphia & Buenos Aires. El artista también ha desarrollado talleres de muralismo en varias comunidades. Recientemente diseñó y dirigió un proyecto de muralismo con confinados que impactó tres ciudades de Puerto Rico.

English BIO:

Diego Romero is a visual artist, musician, composer and producer from Puerto Rico. He explores art as language, juxtaposing symbols such as cultural icons and logos, recontextualizing the images as a form of resistance and invention. His work codifies the historical and current political-social environment of Puerto Rico. He seeks to decolonize and to resignify appropriated objects. He aligns musical composition and production with sound frequencies to generate connection as a form of both personal and collective liberation.

After playing in the streets of Puerto Rico and other cities internationally, Romero is releasing his first solo project, Una Voz. The EP is rooted in Afro-Caribbean rhythms and the indigenous traditions of Puerto Rico. In 2020, as the lead vocalist, he toured Bogota, Colombia with Puya, a Latin-Metal band founded in Puerto Rico. He has also collaborated with Tepeu, Alkem, Danny Rivera, among others, and has produced collective shows and performances throughout Puerto Rico and across the States.

Romero has been active in graffiti and street art in Carolina, Puerto Rico, since 1998, apprenticing with Thor, Ske, Rosamarie Berrios, Martin Garcia Rivera, Jaime Romano, Susana Herrero, Enrique Garcia Gutierrez and Rafael Trelles. His murals are found internationally in cities such as Montreal, New York, Philadelphia & Buenos Aires. He’s also offered various community art workshops to many populations. He recently designed and directed a prison mural project across three cities in Puerto Rico.
